The Ohio Street Bridge, located between Rural and Solfisburg Street, will be closed to all traffic beginning Monday.The closure is required while the contractor makes repairs to the existing sidewalk.

Ohio Street between Sheffer Road and Front Street will be closed to through traffic.

A detour route will be posted using Farnsworth Avenue as an alternative.

The project will take about three weeks to complete.

Pupils pop corn for NY firefighters

Fourth-graders at Freeman Elementary School are selling popcorn to classmates at 25 cents a bag to benefit the New York firefighters relief fund.

The 100 fourth-grade students, based at the Aurora University campus for daily classes, began the benefit popcorn sale Sept. 20. It will end Friday.

Genealogy assistance offered at library

The Aurora Public Libraries will offer two genealogy assistance sessions this month.

The sessions will meet from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday and from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 16.

The sessions will be held in the Eleanor Plain Conference Room on the second floor of the main library at 1 E. Benton Street.

These informal sessions will be conducted by experienced volunteer genealogists.

Marmion will enter band competition

Marmion Academy's Marching Band is participating in the 14th annual Wheaton North High School Marching Band competition.

Eighteen bands will compete from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday.

Admission to the event is $10 per adult, $5 per student, $5 per senior and $20 for a family of four.

Children under 6 pay no admission.

Marmion's Marching Band includes female students from Rosary High School in Aurora.

Construction work slated on Kirk Road

There will be construction work in the southbound lane of Kirk Road in Batavia from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.

The outside lane will be closed during the work.

Curbing is being replaced from Wind Energy Pass to 300 feet north.

The Kane County Division of Transportation advises that motorists can expect delays.

Churches, Lions plan food drive

More than 100 volunteers from 10 Batavia churches and the Batavia Lions Club will join Jewel, Aldi and Amstadt's to help restock the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry during Food Sharing Days, Friday through Sunday.

Volunteers will be passing out lists of suggested items that the Food Pantry needs.

Containers for money donations will be available for those not grocery shopping.

Volunteer staff at the pantry will sort and shelve the grocery items for distribution to qualified needy Batavia and Batavia Township residents.

The Food Pantry serves about 500 people each month.

Grocery donations also may be dropped off directly at the Food Pantry, which is located at 100 Flinn Drive, two blocks south of Wilson Street in Batavia.

Hours are 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. to noon Friday.

Public can tour Horlock Prairie

The public can tour Horlock Prairie in LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, well-known for its diversity of plants and animals, on Sunday.

Plant expert Scott Horlock will lead a tour of the prairie, named for his father, the late Bob Horlock, from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

During the walk, Scott will share his experience in prairie ecology as well as landscaping with native plants.

The program is free and open to the public.

The tour will begin at the Great Western Trail on the south side of Dean Street in St. Charles.

Clothing, toys offered at sale

Davis Elementary School's PTO will have a Clothing, Toy and Equipment Sale for Kids from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the school, Seventh and Horne streets, St. Charles.

Children's clothing, sizes infant through preteen, baby equipment, children's furniture, sports equipment, costumes, Scouting uniforms, toys, books, games, videos and maternity wear will be among the items for sale.

All items with a white sale tag will be half-price between the hours of 8 and 10 a.m. Saturday.

Hundreds of items will be $1 or less between 10 and 11 a.m.

Aurora parishes to benefit from fair

The Cream of the Crop Craft Fair is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 6 in the St. Margaret Mary Parish Center, 1450 Green Trails Drive (at Naper Boulevard), Naperville.

A raffle of hand-crafted items donated by fair participants will be included.

Proceeds will benefit Sharing Parish Program activities with Sacred Heart and St. Nicholas parishes in Aurora.

Lunch will be available.

Gustafson School plans clothing/toy sale

The Alice Gustafson School PTO will hold sellers' registration for its annual Fall and Winter Clothing/Toy Sale from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the school lobby, 905 Carlisle Road, off Route 31 in Batavia.

For previous sellers only, an unmanned registration table will be available in the school lobby between Monday and Thursday during school hours.

Phone registration also will be available between those dates by calling Kim Ambrosat at (630) 406-8887 before 8 p.m.

A $2 registration fee includes price tags, instructions and advertising.

Sellers receive 65 percent of the sale price, while the remaining 35 percent is used to fund field trips, educational programs, materials and equipment for Gustafson students and staff.

Sale items should not be brought to registration.

A drop-off date will be assigned to the seller at registration, and the seller must then bring tagged, priced items to the school on the assigned date.

Only PTO-provided tags will be allowed.

A check for the sold items will be mailed directly to the seller.

The PTO accepts clean, gently used clothing for infants, children and adults as well as maternity wear, baby furniture and accessories, Scout uniforms, costumes, children's shoes and boots, books, games, children's videotapes and toys.

The sale will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 19 and 8:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 20.
