SIDELIGHTS: In conjunction with a long career as a sports writer for periodicals and editor of sports magazines, Al Silverman has written a number of books that are primarily about sports-related topics. It's Not Over 'Til It's Over: The Stories behind the Most Magnificent, Heart-Stopping Sports Miracles of Our Time, for example, features the stories of thirteen sporting events in the twentieth century that the author has deemed extraordinary. Silverman includes accounts of the 1971 boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, the U.S. Women's soccer team's victory over China in the 1999 Women's World Cup, the so-called 'Miracle on Ice' hockey match-up between the United States and the Soviet Union at the 1980 Winter Olympics, and the 1908 heartbreaking loss of the New York Giants to the Chicago Cubs which ruined the Giants' season. Calling the book 'engaging reading,' a reviewer for Publishers Weekly noted, 'He often tracks down and interviews event participants to provide perspective …, giving the book its greatest authority.'
