Bergquist, Phyllis Leone Died Friday, December 3, 2010 at her daughter's home in Lexington, KY. Born December 17, 1922 in the rural Minnesota town of Litchfield, she was the second of three children of George and Nellie Swanson. At the age of 3, little Phyllis was lifted onto the piano bench of First Baptist Church in Grove City and proceeded to perform a piano duet with her mother Nellie, the church organist. It was the first of literally thousands of public piano performances. Phyllis was known for her spontaneous, remarkable piano playing 'by ear,' which brought much delight and comfort to countless listeners. Not only could she hear music and replicate it at the keyboard (with even more nuanced harmonic changes), but she also always asked others to join in the singing and music-making. Family gatherings were filled with joyful, uplifting music - sacred and popular - from all eras. God gave her a unique gift that she generously shared with others, including: Christian Women's Club (both in Edina and downtown Minneapolis), Methodist Hospital (stroke victims unit and Hospital foundation special events), Wooddale Church (dinner theater, musicals, and the annual Christmas Tea), Presbyterian Homes at Beacon Hill (Sunday chapel, and special concerts with daughter Ginny), and the Sanibel Yacht Club. Additionally, Phyllis had a lovely mezzo voice, participating in Cecilian Singers of Minneapolis, in a select group directed by Edith Norberg, in the Manor Tones of St. Louis Park. She and her husband were long-time members of the First Baptist Church choir of Minneapolis. Phyllis loved to entertain, displaying her warm gift of hospitality by opening her homes (in St. Louis Park and Bay Lake in Deerwood, MN and later at Beacon Hill in Minnetonka) for delicious meals, baby and bridal showers, birthdays, progressive dinners, and New Year's Eve galas. Singing and music always were a part of these happy events. The sustaining force of her life was her lifelong faith in her Lord Jesus Christ. After the sudden death of her precious husband of 46 years, Hilding Linne Bergquist, Phyllis was repeatedly comforted by the words of Isaiah 43, 'I have called you by name and you are Mine. When you pass through the waters I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through the fire you shall not be burned and the flame shall not consume you.' She missed 'Bergy' daily, but continued to live a purposeful life and enjoyed opportunities to travel to Africa, Israel, Ireland, Scandinavia, and many vacations to the homes of her four adult children throughout the country. Phyl was deeply loved and her joyous, up-for- anything spirit leaves a great void in our lives. Preceded in death by her husband Hilding (Bergy) in 1988 and her sister Marian (Moya) Uram in 2008, she is survived by her brother David Swanson, and by her children: Kathleen (Leslie) Klemt, Virginia (David) Bowles, Roger (Mariya) Bergquist, and Julie (James) Cox. She is also survived by her beloved grandchild- ren: Lisa (Mark) Quiroz, David Klemt, Laura (Matt) Foster, Baylee and Caleb Cox, Daniel and Jonathan Bergquist, and by her great-grandchildren Natalie and Nicholas Quiroz, and many cherished cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to Hospice of the Bluegrass and to those compassionate individuals who made special visits to the house to provide personal care. Memorial gifts may be made to Traditional Music Ministries of Wooddale Church, 6630 Shady Oak, Eden Prairie, MN 55344. A celebration of Phyllis' life and music will be held in Minneapolis in the spring.
McCrady, Norbert A. age 87 of Eden Prairie, passed away December 9. Norb was born in Owatonna MN. He served with the US Army Red Bull Division during WWII. He was a long-time political activist in Minnesota and nationally, beginning in 1954 as Steele County Treasurer, and later as the Republican Party's unsuccessful candidate for Secretary of State. His political persuasion evolved over the years as he supported various progressive causes. Norbert was very passionate about such issues as women's rights and economic equality between the haves and have-nots. For many years he was a lobbyist and association executive advocating to limit the power of large national banks, a cause he continued to support as a writer and consultant in his retirement years. He loved to sing, and rarely passed an opportunity to take the microphone, including stand-ins with Doc Evans, Harry Blons, Bob Crosby & the Bobcats, the Turkey River All Stars, the Pigs Eye Jass Band, and Ruth Adams & the World's Most Dangerous Polka Band. He enjoyed many Sunday nights at the Prom Ballroom providing vocals with the Jules Herman Band, and at the Steele County Fair with the Armond Rezac Band. In his retirement years he was probably most proud of his singing gigs and good friendships with the Jurassic Trio and the Jazz Jammers, and all great musicians who welcomed him into their bands.
